Troll Filter

Over the years a lot of my decision making as a creator has been done from a cynical perspective. That is to say whenever I pick a topic or write a script or edit a video, I take a moment to look at it through the lens of a cliche jaded internet troll and try to make it troll proof. My thinking is that if I can make a video that even they have a hard time tearing down or attacking, then the video will do even better among, ya know, decent people.

All in all I feel that it has worked, because I don’t get a lot of abusive comments, and the ones I do get are usually nonsensical. It makes me think they wanted to say something mean, but because I gave them no real ammo to work with they had to just resort to verbal diarrhea. Though the internet being the internet, I’m sure a few of them were at that point from the get-go.

That said, there are times where I wonder if this approach has limited me in ways. Just tonight I was considering if it would be worth using a week to produce a revised video about the origins of the Super Bowl Disney ad campaign. You know, the whole “So and so, you’ve just won the Super Bowl. What are you going to do now?” It’s a topic I covered a long time ago, back when I was just talking into a webcam and putting little photos in the corner. It was also from when I had something like 10k-15k subscribers.

So I feel that maybe if I re-research everything, write a whole new script (or I guess a script, since the original wasn’t scripted), and produce a new video in my current style, it could do well for a new audience. The only thing that has stopped me is that the little troll filter in my brain is thinking “Wow Rob, you’ve run out of ideas so now you’re just remaking old videos, eh? How lazy.”

This only comes to mind now because it seems like my History of MCO video is falling apart, and I’m considering this Super Bowl remake as an easy video for what will be a short week. I really want to cover MCO, but I just can’t for the life of me find a story to tell. It really is turning out to be a super bland video wikipedia article.

I think the main source of my hesitation is in that last paragraph right there. “as an easy video.” I feel like it would be an instance where that troll criticism would ring true. So I guess if I were to do it, it would have to be for the right reasons, and at the right time.

In any case, no mindful wrap up here or moral of the story I suppose. Just a thought that occupied my mind tonight while trying to figure out what to do. It’s only 2am, so I’m going to spend another hour or so researching MCO and seeing if inspiration strikes.

It will hopefully happen in the quiet of the night, because the next two days of my life will be non-stop planning and packing and packing and planning. Then six exciting weeks. Bring it on!
